It was a smooth transition from Sydney to Singapore for Aussie forex trader Dave Simpson, who moved here with his New Zealander wife and two young kids in July 2017.
“We had relocation assistance from the bank I work for and the team took care of all the logistics so it was all relatively straightforward,” he recalls.
The couple visited Singapore a month before the big move to search for a place to live as well as new schools for their two boys aged 3 and 6.

“We looked at condos in Orchard Road and River Valley but I wasn’t too keen on high-rise living with two young kids and a dog. I wanted to try and replicate what we had in Australia; a house with a swimming pool, and also a nice community feel,” says Dave.
The family eventually settled on Greenwood Mews, a collection of cluster homes in Bukit Timah.

“It’s really modern with a nice, tropical feel,” says Dave. “It’s a brand new development so no one else has lived in this house before. Each of the cluster houses is identical and faces the lap pool, which you can access straight from the balcony.”
“We moved all our furniture from Australia here and tried to make it as homely as what we had back home,” he shares.

The best part is the pool: “The kids are always swimming in the pool – they could barely swim before but now they’re like little dolphins,” says the proud father. The older son goes to the Australian International School while the younger one attends a daycare centre near their home.

It took the Simpsons two to three full days of house-hunting with their agent to find their perfect place, and they recommend others take their time as well.

“Look at the areas you want to live in, and view as many places as you can. It would be valuable if you get the chance to do that before you move here, as it will give you a good feel of the place,” he advises other would-be expats.

The 39-year-old had lived and worked in London, where he met his wife, before moving back to Sydney in 2005. “We’d always wanted to have an experience living in Singapore but the time wasn’t right or the opportunity was not there. Then this opportunity came along to join the organisation I’ve joined and it was such a unique opportunity to come to Singapore and experience a different lifestyle and culture.”
“We love it here. It’s been a really easy transition and we’re having a great time. The food’s great and there’s so much to do. And the weather’s great for all-year round swimming. It’s an easy place to live and the low tax rate helps; it’s the best lifestyle you could have in the world,” says Dave.
