SLA signs skills development partnership MOU with Bhutan; pledges support for SMU research on urban heat challenges

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has signed a skills development partnership with Bhutan and pledged its support to the Singapore Management University (SMU) to support research projects on climate change and urban challenges.
The collaborations were unveiled at the Singapore Geospatial Forum, organised by SLA, as part of the 9th World Cities Summit, held from June 2 to 4 at Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore.
An MOU was signed between the National Land Commission Secretariat of Bhutan and SLA to collaborate on skills development to support Bhutan’s national development by establishing a comprehensive land administration framework.

The MOU will also see both countries explore opportunities to deepen Bhutan’s geospatial capabilities. It was signed by Tshering Gyaltshen Penjor, secretary of NLCS, and Thong Wai Lin, deputy chief executive of SLA.
Separately, SLA also inked an agreement with SMU’s College of Integrative Studies (CIS) and Urban Institute (UI) to collaborate on leveraging geodata to support research projects on climate change and urban challenges.
This will include a multi-disciplinary research project called Cooling Singapore 2.0, which the Singapore-based ETH Centre leads in partnership with SMU, Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, TUMCREATE (established by the Technical University of Munich), National University of Singapore, and Cambridge University.

Cooling Singapore 2.0 is dedicated to developing solutions to address urban heat challenges. According to SLA, its contributions will enrich the geospatial talent pipeline by participating in co-led activities, collaborative research projects, and undergraduate and postgraduate research opportunities.
An MOU was signed by Professor Elvin Lim, dean of CIS; associate professor Orlando Woods, director of UI; Thong Wai Lin, deputy chief executive of SLA; and Sin Lye Chong, assistant chief executive of SLA.
SLA adds that the collaborations with Bhutan and SMU align with the statutory board’s objective of extending its global partnerships and deepening geospatial capabilities and mainstream geo-technologies for social, community and sustainability outcomes.
