Bishopsgate Residences penthouse gets $1.1 mil makeover

SINGAPORE (EDGEPROP) - Leading interior design firm SuMisura recently completed an extensive renovation of a 6,082 sq ft, four-bedroom penthouse at Bishopsgate Residences. The 31-unit, freehold luxury condominium was developed by Japanese developer Kajima Corp, and completed in November 2012.
The new owner of the penthouse, believed to be a Chinese national who relocated from Hong Kong, had engaged SuMisura to design his new home after seeing the other penthouses at Bishopsgate Residences designed by the interior design firm.
“We were very conscious about creating a penthouse with its own identity,” says Angela Lim, director and co-founder of SuMisura. The designer also wanted the penthouse to “celebrate” its surroundings, the lush greenery in the coveted Bishopsgate and Chatsworth Road Good Class Bungalow enclave in prime District 10.

The penthouse was in its original condition when the owner purchased it with vacant possession. However, as the development was completed over a decade ago, and the unit had been unoccupied throughout, most of the fixtures and finishes were showing their age, Lim recounts.
The duplex penthouse has a living and dining area opening out to a roof terrace with a dipping pool, a wet and dry kitchen with a yard, as well as four en suite bedrooms, on the first level. On the mezzanine level is a study.
The owner wanted SuMisura to clearly define some of the spaces within the unit as he felt that there were some pockets of space that could be utilised. He also wanted to increase the efficiency and flow of the spaces within the unit.

Renovations started in early 2022 and were completed by the end of July. The owner spent about $1.13 million for the entire renovations, including lighting, furniture and accessories. The dipping pool at the roof terrace was removed, and the space was turned into an alfresco dining area that can seat up to 14 people.
Many of the original hard finishes — flooring, walls and ceilings, as well as countertops — were replaced, with new bronze metal framework, stone including marble and travertine, and hardwood flooring relates SuMisura’s Lim. The 6.9m entrance hallway to the living area was enhanced by a full-height feature wall of book-matched marble. The owner opted for an extra-large round dining table that can seat 12. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors and windows allow generous natural lighting into the interior of the living and dining areas. Motorised translucent day curtains and opaque curtains ensure privacy and control the amount of daylight entering the unit.
The original staircase leading to the mezzanine level was enhanced with metal and glass elements as well as lighting. The previously underutilised corridor space leading to the staircase has also been transformed with the addition of a bespoke shoe cabinet.

The mezzanine level has been turned into a study loft, with full-height glass panels to allow a bird’s eye view of the living area below, but at the same time shields the occupant from noise and allows the space to be fully airconditioned. “The study loft is an elevated space where one can hide away and enjoy a sense of calm,” says Lim.
SuMisura designed the bedrooms to be both functional and luxurious. The master bedroom features French doors, with a concealed walk-in wardrobe behind a marble feature wall. The walk-in wardrobe has been customised to suit the needs of the owner. The master bathroom has also had a makeover, and has been designed as a relaxing space “with the ambience of a luxury boutique hotel”, according to Lim.
The junior master bedroom as well as the two other bedrooms have also been reconfigured and the space enhanced with lighting and tastefully designed furniture pieces.
“We wanted to give the penthouse a new lease of life by layering the space with a dialogue of rich colours, intriguing textures and bold marble patterns to complement the spaciousness of the unit,” says Lim. “The focus was not only to beautify the space but to add value to the penthouse.”
