Tanglin is one of our island’s most salubrious addresses, overrun with mega-sized homes showcasing equally mammoth price tags. It’s on the cusp of the Orchard Road area, and within walking distance to Singapore’s celebrated shopping belt and elegant landmarks, including ION Orchard Mall and the Royal Thai Embassy.
Despite being one of Singapore’s most central and upscale neighbourhoods, Tanglin hides three stunning walks that will make locals and tourists alike forget they’re in the heart of Singapore’s busiest district. Take a jaunt down one of these to find respite from busy city living, and marvel at the vibrantly green surroundings.
Phoenix Park Walking Route.
This walk will transport wayfarers right into a secret hideaway nestled among majestic trees and buildings. Start at Phoenix Park and ramble along the narrow concrete path down a wide road flanked by some of Singapore’s most gorgeous greenery.
The wild charm of this straight route is made even more amazing by the fact that this stroll is along Tanglin Road, and leads the wanderer to the heart of the Orchard Road belt, a mere five-minute drive away. Go past the grand estates of lofty developments such as Tanglin Park, Tanglin Hill Meadows, Tanglin Condominium, and a quaint little domicile called Michel Apartments. The riotous greenery is what likely keeps this scenic walk so cool and fresh, and it’s no wonder the road is the favourite haunt of joggers.

Almost two centuries ago, nutmeg trees thrived and bore fruit on a farm named Mount Harriet, comfortably spread on the hills of Dempsey. This idyllic milieu came to a diseased end when blight devoured the nutmeg trees, and the plantation ceased to be.
Today, the old plantations have transformed into Singapore’s version of London’s Knightsbridge, a genteel, sophisticated enclave squirrelled out of town’s sight, home to ritzy restaurants, chi-chi cafes, and first-rate watering holes. Beneath this epicurean veneer, Dempsey Hill still retains its rich heritage and is home to several featured trails, including the Nature-Heritage Trail.
This trek begins at St. George’s Church, which was Tanglin Barracks’ garrison church till 1971. Amble past the celebrated White Rabbit, a fine-dining establishment settled in a former church. You would go through little roads bringing you to the doorstep of stores specialising in furniture, antiques, and home décor items. The trail lasts as long as travellers wish it to, making it an ideal lazy afternoon spent exploring this cosy spot near town.
